Gene Function
CD14 acts as a co-receptor with TLR4 to detect bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and other pathogen-associated molecular patterns. It is now widely recognized that CD14 serves as a 'pattern recognition' receptor in innate immunity for a variety of antigens. Found mostly on monocytes and macrophages (scavenger cells) it is most known for its role in the processing of 'endotoxin,' lipopolysaccharides typcially found on pathogenic bacteria. Once activated, CD14 then triggers a variety of 'inflammasomes,' inflammation networks that activate in response to infection.
