Gene Function
CYP2R1is a phase I detoxifying enzyme that converts vitamin D into the active form (ligand) for the vitamin D receptor. Polymorphisms in this gene has been associated with selective 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency ( low circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and classic symptoms of vitamin D deficiency). Found in the liver, CYP2R1 is a vitamin D hydroxylase (an enzyme that adds a oxygen and hydrogen molecule to another molecule) converting vitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol), which is the major form of the vitamin found in the circulation.
