Gene Function
The GPX1 gene provides instructions for making a member of the glutathione peroxidase family. Glutathione peroxidase helps to detoxify hydrogen peroxide, an oxidizing molecule made in the body, into water, and is one of the most important antioxidant enzymes. This protein along with GPX 2, 3 and 4 are some of only a few proteins known to contain selenocysteine, a form of selenium, and protect cells from oxidative stress. In addition, this protein is characterized by a polyalanine sequence polymorphism which includes three alleles with five, six or seven alanine (ALA) repeats in this sequence. The allele with five ALA repeats is significantly associated with breast cancer risk.
