Fibrobacteria

RANK: Class

TAXONOMY: cellular organisms -> Bacteria -> FCB group -> Fibrobacteres -> Fibrobacteria

OVERVIEW:

Fibrobacteria are the most important cellulose-digesting bacteria. They are oxygen intolerant and live in the stomach of ruminants (grass-eating mammals like cows, sheep and goats). They are among the few organisms capable of degrading wood fiber. They help animals break down and digest plants. Cellulose materials (wood pulp) make up the majority of human organic garbage. The ability of the Fibrobacteria to digest paper - office paper, filter paper, newspaper; magazine paper - makes it interesting for recycling efforts.
