OVERVIEW:

Ruminococcus torques (GenBank Accession Number for 16S rRNA gene: D14137) is a member of the Firmicutes division of the domain bacteria. In one comprehensive 16S rDNA sequence- based enumeration of the colonic microbiota of three healthy adult humans, it represents, on average, 0.482% of all 16S rDNA sequences and 0.949% of the sequences in its division (Eckburg et. al. (2005)). The sequenced strain was obtained from ATCC (ATCC# 27756). This is from the Human Gut Microbiome Initiative. At the species level, butyrate-producing bacterial species, such as Blautia faecis, Roseburia inulinivorans, Ruminococcus torques, Clostridium lavalense, Bacteroides uniformis and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii were significantly reduced in Crohn's disease patients as compared to healthy individuals (p < 0.05). [PMID: 26789999 ] Increased abundance of Sutterella spp. and Ruminococcus torques in feces of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The numbers of Sutterella spp. are elevated in feces of ASD children relative to controls, and that numbers of R. torques are higher in the children with ASD with a reported functional gastrointestinal disorder than those without such a disorder. This species has been identified as a resident in the human gastrointestinal tract based on the phylogenetic framework of its small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences.[PMC 4262072]
