Veillonella atypica

RANK: Species

TAXONOMY: Terrabacteria group -> Firmicutes -> Negativicutes -> Selenomonadales -> Veillonellaceae -> Veillonella -> Veillonella atypica

OVERVIEW:

Identified as a constituent of the oral microbiome by Human Oral Microbiome Database. Identified as constituent of vaginal microbiome. [PMID:23282177]

This species has been identified as a resident in the human gastrointestinal tract based on the phylogenetic framework of its small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences.[PMC 4262072].

Veillonella atypica isolated from marathon athletes and given to mice increased the performance of the mice by 13 percent in laboratory treadmill tests due to the bacteria breaking down lactate, which accumulates with prolonged exercise, and producing propionate, which enhances the body’s resilience to exercise stress.
