OVERVIEW:

Recent molecular analyses suggest that bacteria related to strains SS2/1 and SSC/2, previously reported to be distantly related to Anaerostipes caccae NCIMB 13811(T), represent one of the ten most abundant phylotypes detected in adult human faecal samples. Anaerostipes hadrus PEL 85, which was isolated from human feces, is a Gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium. The species may play an important role in gut health, as it was previously reported to produce butyric acid. A. hadrus has been estimated to represent >2% of the total microbiota in a healthy human colon , and the species has been shown to produce butyrate. Co-culture of the non-starch degrading species Anaerostipes hadrus with R. bromii can be seen to result in the removal of reducing sugar that accumulated in the R. bromii monoculture.

This species has been identified as a resident in the human gastrointestinal tract based on the phylogenetic framework of its small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences.[PMC 4262072]
