Cells may be motile by means of a single polar to subpolar flagellum. Grows lithoautotrophically and chemoorganotrophically. Under oxic conditionsa nitrite is the preferred energy source and carbon dioxide is the main source of carbon. Aerobic, but also capable of anaerobic respiration with nitrate. Under anoxic conditions nitrate is reduced to nitrite, nitric oxide, and nitrous oxide.
