γ-Amino butyric acid (GABA)

GABA is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It reduces neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system and is also directly responsible in regulation of muscle tone. GABA is synthesized from glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter, via glutamate decarboxylase and can be reversed back into glutamate by the Krebs cycle.
