D-Mannitol

D-Mannitol is classified as a sugar alcohol that is derived from mannose by a reduction reaction. Mannitol increases blood glucose to a lesser extent than sucrose and is therefore used as a sweetener for individuals with diabetes and in chewing gum. Mannitol is routinely used for decreasing intracranial pressure, kidney failure, decreasing intraocular pressure and as a laxative.
