OVERVIEW:

The Cytophagaceae are a family of bacteria. The type genus is Cytophaga. Many species are rod-shaped and moved by sliding. Some species, such as from Flectobacillus can form filaments. The Gram test is negative. Types of Sporocytophaga form resting stages, called Mikrocysten. They resemble the rest stages of myxobacteria. The species are usually strictly aerobic, so dependent on oxygen for respiration. Some may however also microaerobically or anaerobic grow, eg types of meniscus. Metabolism is chemoorganotroph. Types of Sporocytophagaand Cytophaga are important for bacterial degradation of cellulose to well-supplied with oxygen (anoxic) locations. In the decomposition of cellulose, the bacteria adhere to the fibers of cellulose to. The enzyme (cellulase)remains connected to the cell wall, free, soluble enzymes for the degradation are not formed. Cellulose is implemented by only a few groups of organisms that are important for this purpose in addition to bacteria especially fungi. Some earlier Cytophaga counted species are pathogenic (pathogens) of fish.
