Synechocystis

   RANK: Genus

TAXONOMY: Bacteria -> Terrabacteria group -> Cyanobacteria/Melainabacteria group -> Cyanobacteria -> Oscillatoriophycideae -> Chroococcales -> Synechocystis

OVERVIEW:

Cyanobacteria of this provisional form-genus are unicellular strains that possess spherical cells 2–6 µm in diameter and reproduce by binary fission in two or three successive planes at right angles. Cells typically occur singly or in pairs in culture; but in nature (and rarely in culture) may occur in aggregates held together by amorphous slime material; well-defined sheath layers are never produced. Gas vacuoles are absent. The mol % G + C of the DNA is: 35–48.
