RANK: Genus

TAXONOMY: Bacteria -> Bacteroidetes/Chlorobi group -> Bacteroidetes -> Flavobacteriia -> Flavobacteriales -> Flavobacteriaceae -> Psychroserpens

OVERVIEW:

Cells are flexible rods with rounded ends, 0.5–0.6 × 2–6 µm, occurring singly or in pairs. Cultures also frequently include coiled or roughly helical filamentous cells up to 20 µm in length. Spores, resting cells, and gas vesicles are not present. Nonmotile. Gram-stain-negative. Colonies are yellow due to accumulation of carotenoids. Flexirubin pigments are not produced. Strictly aerobic, having an oxidative type of metabolism. Catalase-positive. Oxidase-negative. Chemoheterotrophic. Nonagarolytic. Carbohydrates are not utilized, except for glycogen. Acid is not formed from carbohydrates. Seawater salts and yeast extract are required for growth. Psychrophilic. Grows between −2 and 18°C, with optimal growth at 10–12°C and pH 6–8. The major fatty acids are C15:0, C15:0 iso, C15:0 anteiso, C15:1 ω10c iso, C15:1 ω10c anteiso, C16:1 ω11c iso, C15:1 ω11c, C15:1 ω4c, and C16:1 ω5c. Isolated from saline lakes of Antarctica.
