Spindle-shaped rods with cells that are 1 × 2–5 µm, and occurring singly or in pairs. Motile by one to four peritrichous flagella. Spores are not formed. Gram-stain-positive. Chemoorganotrophic and obligately anaerobic. Requires yeast extract for growth. Oxidizes a few carbohydrates to butyrate, acetate, CO2, and H2. Uses thiosulfate and sulfur as electron acceptors during glucose fermentation with production of H2S. Mesophilic, neutrophilic, and halotolerant. DNA G+C content (mol%): 43 (HPLC). Type species: Fusibacter paucivorans
