α-Ketobutyric acid

α-Ketobutyric acid is produced by the degradation of homocysteine and the metabolism of methionine. It is transported into the mitochondria and participates in the TCA cycle, thus influences the energy production in cells. It is also a degradation product of threonine, produced by catabolism of the amino acid by threonine dehydratase.
