D-Sorbitol

D-Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol which the human body metabolizes slowly. It can be obtained by reduction of gulcose. Most sorbitol is made from corn syrup but it is also found in apples, pears, peaches and prunes. D-Sorbitol is used as a sweetener, laxative, cosmetic and in softgels for liquid medicine. Medically, it is used to determine pathogenic E.coli O157:H7 from other strains of E.coli.
