D-Galactose

D-Galactose is a monosaccharide sugar that is less sweet than glucose or fructose. When combined with glucose via a condensation reaction, the disaccharide lactose is formed. Galactose is rapidly converted to glucose intracellularly, which is then used as a source of energy. Chronic systemic exposure of mice, rats and drosophila to D-galactose causes the acceleration of senescence and is routinely used as an aging model in studies.
