Acetate

The ratio of serum acetate to propionate was significantly higher with ingestion of lactulose than with that of glucose or L-rhamnose (P < 0.01). [PMID: 15213033] Acetate acts as a substrate for lipogenesis and gluconeogenesis. Synthesized directly from acetyl-CoA or from CO2 via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. Energy substrate. Activates GPR43 and GPR41. Activates AMPK pathway. Anti-inflammatory. Anti-lipogenic. Improves insulin sensitivity. Increases energy expenditure. Reduces glycemia in diabetic rodent models. Protects against asthma. [PMID: 27102537]
