Streptococcus rubneri

   RANK: Species

TAXONOMY: Terrabacteria group -> Firmicutes -> Bacilli -> Lactobacillales -> Streptococcaceae -> Streptococcus -> Streptococcus rubneri

OVERVIEW:

A hitherto unknown bacterial species was isolated in the course of a study on the effect of a probiotic drink on the incidence of potentially pathogenic bacteria in the human throat.  The new Streptococcus species exhibited a β-hemolytic reaction on sheep blood agar (see Figure), which suggests that these bacteria are probably pathogenic.
