Bacteroides plebeius
RANK: Species
TAXONOMY: Bacteroidetes/Chlorobi group -> Bacteroidetes -> Bacteroidia -> Bacteroidales -> Bacteroidaceae -> Bacteroides -> Bacteroides plebeius
OVERVIEW:
Bacteroides plebeius in known to digest complex carbohydrates in seaweed, and likely acquired this ability via horizontal gene transfer from a marine bacterium many centuries ago. Thus it is not surprising that foreign-born Korean participants in our study were the only group with enrichment of Bacteroides plebeius, being the only group under study with seaweed as a regular dietary component ... Bacteroides plebeiusm, a seaweed-degrading bacterium, was strongly enriched in foreign-born Koreans, while Prevotella copri and Bifidobacterium adolescentis were strongly enriched in foreign-born Koreans and Hispanics … Dietary acculturation may result in loss of native species in immigrants [ISME Journal. 2020 Jul;14(7):1639-1650].
Identified as constituent of vaginal microbiome. [PMID:23282177]
This species has been identified as a resident in the human gastrointestinal tract based on the phylogenetic framework of its small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences.[PMC 4262072]
