Thin rod-shaped cells. Gram positive and sporeforming. Strictly anaerobic and catalase negative. Glucose is fermented. End products of metabolism from peptone/yeast extract broth are acetic and butyric acids. Gelatin is not hydrolyzed. Urease negative. Nitrate is not reduced to nitrite. Indole positive. Based on 16S rRNA sequence and phylogenetic analysis, this genus belongs to the Clostridium leptum rRNA super cluster (Cluster IV). Isolated from human feces and blood. DNA G+C content (mol%): 53–54.
This genus contains microbial species that can reside in the human gastrointestinal tract. [PMC 4262072] Decreased in metabolic disorders.
