TAXONOMY: cellular organisms -> Bacteria -> Bacteroidetes/Chlorobi group -> Bacteroidetes -> Bacteroidia -> Bacteroidales -> Porphyromonadaceae

OVERVIEW:

The Porphyromonadaceae family of bacteria is composed of two genera of environmental bacteria, Porphyromonas and Dysgonomonas. Porphyromonadaceae, a family within the order Bacteroidales, comprises the genera Porphyromonas, Barnesiella, Butyricimonas, Dysgonomonas, Macellibacteroides, Odoribacter, Paludibacter, Parabacteroides, Petrimonas, Proteiniphilum, and Tannerella. The type genus is the genus Porphyromonas. Members of the family are defined by a variety of cellular morphologies and chemotaxonomic characteristics. Many species of the family Porphyromonadaceae are part of the indigenous microbiota of the human and animal gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity, but some species in this family are commonly associated with a variety of human and animal infections.
