OVERVIEW:

Formerly known as Bacteroides melaninogenicus subsp. intermedius, and then Bacteroides intermedius. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA sequence comparisons and biochemical characteristics warranted separate genus designation to the genus Prevotella, i.e., Prevotella intermedia.Black pigmented colonies (0.5- 2.0 mm diameter) after anaerobic incubation for 2 days on hemin-containing agar media. Hemin is required for growth, Vitamin K is stimulatory. Colonies fluoresce under shortwave UV.Primarily colonizes the gingival crevice, but also found in head, neck, abdominal, and lung infections. Has been isolated from blood.Although commonly detected in subgingival plaque, P. intermedia has been associated with periodontal disease, aggressive periodontitis, necrotizing ulcerative periondontis, endodontic infections , and facial gangrene (noma). Has also been linked to coronary artery disease. Identified as a constituent of the oral microbiome by Human Oral Microbiome Database. Identified as constituent of vaginal microbiome. This species has been identified as a resident in the human gastrointestinal tract based on the phylogenetic framework of its small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences.[PMC 4262072]
