MAPPER: Dynamic network / pathway mapping

The MAPPER app allows you to visualize your client's genomic data directly in a number of hand-curated pathway maps. In addition to allowing for quick pattern recognition, MAPPER uses combinatorics and graph theory to ascertain certain functional characteristics of genes in the network, based on their position in a web of interconnections.

Working with MAPPER

From the main menu bar at the top of the screen, hover your mouse cursor over the link labeled 'Mappings'. This will trigger a pull-down menu showing the current categories of maps available (Detoxification Networks, Inflammatory Networks, etc.) Select your area of interest. You will then be presented with thumbnails of the various maps under that category. Select a map by clicking on the image or the link below it. This will load the map into the full window. Here we are presented with the various genes associated with the activity of the map subject.

When you first load a map into MAPPER you are in 'Global Analysis' mode.

Clicking the 'Power Analysis' link at the top of the map switches the view to 'Power Analysis' mode.

To read a synopsis of the network map, click on 'About This Map.'

Layout The Mapper uses standard network pathway symbols:
  • Genes are in boxes with bold outlines, gene products, substrates and inhibitors are in boxes with grey outlines
  • A line ending with a circle at a gene signifies that the molecule is metabolized by the gene or genes. Cofactors along the pathway that they assist are colored grey
  • A line ending with an arrow signifies the direction of metabolism
  • A line ending with a transverse line signifies inhibition
MAPPER results will display in the Chart Report if the 'Include Functional Analysis' is set to 'on' in the Report Options Screen (this is the default). MAPPER elements display in the Chart Report under 'Functional Networks'. You can also select maps in the Chart Report for inclusion in the Client Report.
